World of Deathknight?

Well, the first thing I did on my new Beta account was roll a new Death Knight.

After playing through the “campaign questline” blizzard designed exclusively for the Death Knights and doing my favorite quest lines in the game (the Western Plagueland Cauldron Quests), I was about 9 bars from level 60, so I decided to go to the outlands.

Here I planned to grind some of the mobs in Legion Front. They provide very quick exp, they are “easy” to kill and will help me finish off my level. After level 60 I would proceed to doing my Outlands Quest cycles.

The DK class, is simply OVER POWERED. My whole time grinding, I did not drop below 90% health. i was not being conservative either. I’m spec’d Unholy, which is a decently high damage spec. I burned through mobs quickly in about 4-5ish hits. Not dropping below 90% health once. No downtime at all.

I told myself as I was actually “creating” the character:

“I will roll one now because I know everyone on my blog is DYING to hear about them, but when it comes to retail, EVERYONE will be playing them… so I will stick with one of my other characters “

Even though I’m pretty stubborn and I stick to my word.. I have totally changed my mind. Tons of people will be playing this class, and they SHOULD. It’s a very fun class with a very new feel to it.

Right now it’s just simply over powered.

On the beta we are able to run 5man DK groups. Which is kind of scary.

I thought the reason for implementing this character was to eliminate the “need” for player roles, such as warriors, since every group needs one.

But with a large band wagon of players jumping to play the Deathknight, what if the class became the game? Why pick up a hunter for a group, when you can add another DK? Why use a priest, when DK’s can virtually keep themselves alive?

However, I know for a fact I will be rolling a Death Knight of my own when it comes to retail.

I know this sounds a little dramatic, but what do you think about the death knight having the potential to literally taking over the game?

Will your current characters just collect dust because they will be of no use?

I´ve not yet tryed it out, but I see your point here Derek Beachler. Though I believe blizzard will reach to fix this shortly if it actually comes down to 24mans DK raids lol. This is afterall what us beta testers is for. :)

In the end, I believe I still stick to my rogue. :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  2. Bobby Says:

Nah, they will even it out, well i hope they do but meh it will be interesting tofind out.

I wonder how many people will level em up.

I WILL level one up to bad i cant play on beta atm.

  3. matthew Says:

well its normal that DK is overpowerd atm but that’s why its only a beta they ar gone balance it to have a weaknes like any other class

  4. Kevin Says:

I can’t w8 for the DK thanks for letting us know about this Jonathan!! :)

  5. matthew Says:

hi cant you make a HD movie from a DK im very eager to see 1 in good quelety coz the moste on internet ar fuzzy and not all of them ar the origenal just the game play againt some mobs dmg taken dmg dealing and a pvp battle against a other clas

  6. lolz0rz Says:

omfg honestly it would be a dk world but i think they’ll fix it…archdruid etc etc etc so it would be fair enough

  7. Stephen Says:

It surely seems that DK looks overpowered, but with all the mind blowing abilities and changes that are going to be integrated into not just DK but all classes, this kind of thing will more than likely be balanced. Sure DK has some advantages, as a self and party supporter, but, the other classes will have something that the DK does not have.

Nothing is set in stone when it comes to Beta, but they won’t be that far off from it. Blizzard will NOT release a character that will replace the others. They intend on keeping the same classes as they started out with and they will morph them around this new addition.

For example, the DK are somewhat resistant to magic spells. Blizzard gave the warlocks an ability that resists resistants and immunities.

My answer is no, they aren’t OP, but they will certainly add a new and unique challenge to the game play. I certainly look forward to rolling my own, but I will not forget the first class I’ve fallen in love with, and that’s my warlock.

    METAMORPHOSIS FOR THE WIN!

  8. Magnus Says:

I think you are totally right about the DK. It will be the most popular class so no people will need other classes in groups. Thanks for the blog.

  9. frederik Says:

how do i sign uo for a try out on death?

  10. T. Parrotte Says:

Same as I feel. I think a Death Knight will ruin the game. Why play anything else if they can do everything.

  11. ryan Says:

I hope blizz makes changes to the class before the release since i would hate it if i saw 5 man Dks in a group to a instance etc , Me personally i am going to level my druid to 80 even if Dk is Op just because i love my Druid and i would hate if they went Instinct! :D

  12. Roby Culver Says:

I really do hope they don’t keep it this way, I do want to play Death Knight, it sounds like such an awesome idea. However, they need to nerf it…quickly.

  13. Glenn Salter Says:

Hey Derek, are Deathknights really this powerful? Wow, it’s kinda hard to imagine, everyone rolling a DK!? hmm… reminds me of Nyhm’s song: Death Knight Spree. I can’t wait for the next expansion to try one ^^ Think I’ll still stick to my warlock as my main and level him to 80 and get him good gear first though

  14. rickard Says:

I’ll lvl my lock to 80, just becouse I think (and wish) that they still will be one of the best DPS classes and I really love the fact that I can beat almost any class in duel and so on.
Tho I think I will lvl a DK to 80 before I get my dr00d there, but not sure yet, and as you said that was just a beta and some changes should be made which should make all the classes on about the same lvl. Thats what I think anyway

  15. Alan Says:

Overpowered?? Man I would love to have a character that rarely drops below 90% health.. And no I don’t subscribe to the idea that it would then be boring…I don’t enjoy dying..does anyone else?? Seems like everyone I see playing wants the biggest, baddest, strongest character they can build, be it warrior, pally, priest or rogue. Of course maybe I wouldn’t mind dying so much if Blizzard would scatter more cemetaries about!! 5 minute runs back to your body? Thats just too damn long! Or I could quit dying so far away…lol

  16. Erik U Says:

I’m sure in true Blizzard fashion, they will re-work all the other classes instead of balancing the Death Knight. Class balance will go out the window, and it will take numerous patches to try and un-snafu things. You may disagree but Blizz’s dismal track record speaks for itself. I think all the classes will be out of wack when the expansion hits.

  17. Olav Says:

5man DK’s, thats very scary indeed. :X I haven’t tested out the DK myself, but if you say you can have 5 DK’s in a instance group instead of a Hunter, Priest, Pala, Mage,Warlock then they are very OP !. (This will most likely to be nerfed though. Don’t think Blizzard wants them to ”conquerr” the game completely. Or would they ;o.)

Personally I have 3 lvl 70’s thats going straight to 80 before I even start getting near the THOUGHT of starting an DK. Really eager 2 explore the new places decently:). Aswel as getting gear on some of the non-badass charackters of mine ;o.

  18. Lawrence Says:

Ya know I was wondering about the OP issue as well. But from playing long enough and seeing all the new abilities given to the other classes, it seem fitting to have this class be something special. Even though I havent seen anything said about it, I believe this class will the the pally counter-class. And with the new ret upgrades, im sure if we all look at every classes new skills, I think can stay that every one is OP. After all Prot Pallys can AOE grind as well.

  19. Rob Says:

I hope that the DK isn’t the only class people play. I enjoy my Warlock despite what the talents for Destruction right now. I will make a death knight but if my warlock does become boring then I will probably join the DK craze being whatever spec I need to be for my guild…

  20. Gary Rezeau Says:

Holy moly! While this sounds attractive, I don’t think having one class be so powerful helps the game play. It seems to me it would become unbalanced in a short time.

And what about PVP? Isn’t part of the fun fighting a variety of classes?

    Just my two cents.

I will still take my 70 hybrid Pally to 80 as one of the first thinks I do when ROTLK goes retail.

  21. Anthalos Says:

Blizzard (still) sucks at balancing classes.

  22. CoolHand Says:

I plan to role a DK and level my other Characters to 80. The Dk may be OP now but we’ve all seen that come and go. I think Blizz makes new classes OP to get the census up and then nerfs them down to a reasonable spec. The DK maybe the OP kid on the block but with future patches they will be just another class option that sound fun to play. Lets see how they do in the arena LOL.

  23. Bray Says:

My experience with Deathknights is exactly the same as yours, save one thing. They ARE OP, they ARE fun, but I will certainly NOT be rolling one. Why’s that, you ask? Because I like a challenge. That’s why I roll a mage and a warrior. You actually need skill to play either well.

  24. Fabio Says:

I think you’ll have the same experience in leveling with every class you try. The new trees are simple awesome, and the mana regen / hp regen / damage done formulas are all changed.

I bet you could also run dungeons with 5 hunters, 5 paladins and maybe even 5 priests if you want. All classes are now OP for Outlands, it’s “beaten content now”. Let’s see how we do in Northrend.

  25. tim Says:

    http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=j

when ever you’re blood speced, a priest should only heal you, so you’re whole party gets healed withing 45 yards… that’s the same as being god isn’t it?

  26. Ebonite Says:

    ROFL…..Ryan , it’s EXTINCT !

  27. Tarlas Says:

Blizz better nerf DKs, if they don’t the game won’t be fun anymore. Most of the fun is coordinating with other players and having different roles in the game.

  28. Scott Says:

I was worried this was going to happen. DK’s will probably dominate PvP too, until the next hero class comes around. Personally I will not be starting one right away, but I will check it out eventually. Having to roll a DK just to compete in anything can’t be good for the game, and Blizz knows this.

  29. Elro of Dignitas, Arygos Says:

I’m sure they will be making significant modifications to the class before the release. My guess is that it WILL be a little overpowered at first because they don’t want to put all their effort into making a new class that no one plays.

So expect changes to prevent 5 toon DK instance runs, but look forward to playing an overpowered class for 3-4 months until they start nerfing it a bit to fix game balance.

In short, don’t drop your favorite toons to play the DK if you don’t expect to keep playing it after the nerf bat comes and balances things out.

  30. Ryan M Says:

I wonder how a lvl 80 DK will compare to a lvl 80 from another class. Does the power curve even out? This I think will make or break the deal for me.

  31. Justin Says:

I don’t like to hear about classes being overpowered for damage this early in beta. Its going to nerfed, what there doing now is making sure all the new abilities do what there supposed to. All of the damage will be fine toned later. Remenber ret paladins with 20k crits?

  32. Backfire Says:

Eeeh, Death Knights will be popular but I doubt them taking over the game. In raids at least, many other classes will still be needed. I dont see my mage not being wanted, who doesnt like food and water? :-p

  33. Mia Says:

Like the above poster, I love my druid – and as she was my first ever character – as well as my first to lvl 70, I will most definitely make getting her to 80 my main priority when the expansion comes out.

Whilst I’m giddy with excitement at the thought of the new DK class, it will most certainly not deter me from playing my other fave classes: warlock, druid, rogue. I love the variety of having many alts of varying classes and dont think I could ever consign myself to simply one class.

  34. jens Says:

i also hope they’ll nerf them a bit, just think about the pvp otherwise, just alot of DK, and the few “normal” characters there will be will just be seen as free kills, also i think it’ll kinda ruin the game if everyone will (which the prob. are) quit their current character to try the DK, which they’ll switch too, they see how overpowered it is. :S

  35. shiny kahdgar Says:

well … tbh blood elf and draeni are still a lil overpowerwed … how about those true to the game players that still play their per TBC toons…. im only s3 making the transition to s4 on my warrior (my pvp toon ) and im working through the 25 man raids ( tbh . blizz messed up ..too many 5 man .. not enough 10 man … and 25 mans being the ubber endgame ).

okay . im all in favour of a new tank class ..as their is a serious lack of tanks …on every realm .

saying that .. i left the game pre tbc and came back .. im catching up ..i dont want WOLK messing up my imbaness ,…

    haha shhhh

  36. Sindari Says:

i am also playing the DK on beta and i have to agree that it is OP. i went blood spec and there are so many ways to regenerate health during a fight that i never dropped below 85% health while doling out an incredible amount of damage. however, this is beta so i expect (actually, i count on) this class being superbly nerfed once retail is released.

i think we can all agree that, for the most part, blizz has been smart in making each class fun and desirable to play to a certain extent so it will not be any different this time around. though everyone and their mother will want to roll a DK when it comes out since it’s a new class, i highly doubt that DK’s will not need other classes to support them in the long run. DK’s have no CC so as OP as they may be (at least for now), they can only do so much with multiple targets. blizz will not make it a solely independent class because that is not appealing to the widespread demographic that the game currently, and successfully, appeals to.

i enjoyed the DK but it got a little boring after a while. after the initial questline sets you up against the lich king, it’s a bunch of button mashing through the same questline that you did with your regular toon through EPL (not my favorite zone, btw).

so, to sum it up, the starting questlines for the DK was quite enjoyable but don’t worry about the DK being OP…it will get nerfed and the playing field will be evened out. i plan on NOT rolling a DK when the retail hits because as of now, there are herds of DK’s rolling around in EPL and that’s just beta. i can’t imagine the mass of DK’s that will be littering EPL once the actual expack hits. it will be insane and i plan on not stepping my foot anywhere near EPL for a long time. i will quietly level my hunter in northrend until people get over it.

  37. paul Says:

I have 77 DK, and it is still fun but not overpowered, all instances are tankable with blue/greens from quests. Damage meteres and damage mitigation are things that kinda hard to measure right now in Beta. Right now problem is itemization for DK,not many items can help with tanking and none resilience armor for pvp.
It is fun class to play nearly as much fun as druid(sadly stuck on EU realms could not copy my feral druid to compare), but currently in blues/greens, no glyphs/enchants/single sygel from start day, hard to tell what end game experience would be like.

  38. Tasha Says:

Yea it would be nice to see them nerfed a bit. I know personally, I love my pally and my hunter so I wouldn’t ever let them collect dust.

  39. RIchard Says:

I also thing they need to be nerfed I have a druid prist and a mage all at 70 and I have put a lot of work into all 3 of my toons. It will piss me off if everything becomes DK this DK that we dont need you druid we dont need you mage and prist. WTG blizzard. If they dont do anything to them the game is done for me imo.

  40. bakasaru Says:

how was it on DPS? I can tell they are going to be the new warrior (aside from the duel-wielding 2 handed weapons), but can they out dps a mge or shadow priest?

  41. Kasper Says:

World of warlocks in 80 :P and hunter and paladins,
seriusly, my brother got the beta, and the death knight aint that overpowered.
but locks with demon form and hunters with explotion shot and a ret paladin that can one shoot you. thats it, and ofc. mages with 1.34 pyroblast xD and warriors with 2x 2handed weopens.
But ill stay on my healing drood :)
but sure im gonna have a death knight alt.

  42. Rookbane Says:

Remember, it’s beta. My DK is tons of fun, but I’m sure there will be all sorts of balance changes before release.

  43. Dean Says:

It would be shortsighted for blizz to play a overpowered single class into the game proper.. it would signal the end of wow.. but I think blizz is just sugaring up the DK class to keep the hype up and pump up sales as much as possible. It’s the name of the game..

  44. Paul Says:

I’m looking forward to the death knight, however I don’t think ppl will stop playing their other toons just coz the DK can do most of the things other toons can, I have 4 70’s, a Lock which is my main full epic which I love and will be going to 80 1st, then a Druid full pvp epic which I also love. So no I think alot of ppl will still be playing their other classes coz lets face it, a DK can’t produce a Soulwell or a Mana Bisket Table, or alot of the other specialties the other classes can.

  45. Andrew Says:

hi, i play a paladin, i switch between holy and retribution, retri fixed soon ftw

i was reading the post and you said you were grinding the mobs on the legion front, unless im mistaken, are they not 2 levels lower then you (at 60) so one at 59, and they are also demon mobs, and im not sure but ive heard that the DK is a powerfull class to fight demons/undead, as is the paladin, at lvl 60 my paladin was able to tear through thoose mobs, exorcism, crusader strike, SoC proc (hopefully) and normal hit, ofc thats burst but it took em down to about 30%, but that did require downtime, the DK has a unique system of runes wich i imagine would be the key to theyre power, as when they use runes they get runic dust, wich other moves use, and before you know it, more runes, so they effectively never run out of “mana”, maby we are destined to become deathknights, who knows, but i will never abondon my paladin, as hopefully they being holy will be a direct threat to deathknights, and their demonic ways, if you could call them demonic, but there will be roles for other classes without a doubt, unless the deathknights are masters of CC and healing? end game will require other classes, but then again how can you get to end game if u cant get a group? your not a DK? why not roll one? there OP after all, tehy will have a weakness, like all classes, the trouble is finding it, blizzard wouldnt impliment a perfect class, otherwise there would be no point in playing wow at all if everyone is the same, all rolling on the same gear, all playing the same class in the same style, there will be a place for your beloved hunter or rouge, druid, priest, warlock, warrior, mage, shaman, yes even your LOL retribution paladin :)

    Kapopanator – Executis

  46. joe Says:

this class is a hero class tho, you cant have someone as a hero class and have the same power as the other class’s. and you are only able to have 1 per account per server. so everyone will make one at first yes, but they will even themselvs out eventualy, like with BC when it first came out.

    p.s
i have played one myself and OMG THERE SO AWSOME!

  47. Cus Says:

OP or not everyone who can will roll a DK when WotLK is released. While this will mean a huge ammount of initial DKs we will find that people are suited to the classes they already play… thats why they play them. I mean… iv rolled a hunter a mage a druid and a warlock and they are all gathering dust becuase i just cant stand to play them so they remain unleveled. This wont stick to everyone but some will find that they just done like DK. Also once released if the DK are still as OP as you say blizz will be flooded with complaints until they release a patch within a week of release so they can nerf the DK.

Just my two cents… but iv been gunning to roll a DK since i heard about them :P thanks for the heads up.

  48. Zach Says:

I would more than likely quit playing WoW if Death Knights became the predominant class. There would be absolutely NO fun in playing a game where EVERYONE is playing the same class the same way. The appeal of WoW to me is it’s diversity. Removing that would kill the game.

  49. Graham Says:

That is a scary thought, but also, if it did happen, people would get bored because it would jus be DK against DK. Nostalgia would kick in and everyone (well most) would long for their old classes and they would ditch DK.
    The circle would begin again.

  50. martin Says:

the dk is a hero class. plain and simple it is supposed to be powerful, or why else have a hero class. just about every class has gotten some major attention and buffs, need i mention titan grip for fury warriors? granted somethings are not working as intended in beta with the dk, but have no fear they will get fixed and will be a great addition to raiding. but they will not take the place of all classes

  51. petrino Says:

well…this is kinda the point…arthas and his death knighs are gonna make everything die out…so in the end there will be only death knight…and we play to stop that from happening…right? is like playing the allies in red alert…you know theyre the bad guys….but you play them anyway…

  52. tyler Says:

ya know i reckon hearing that i wana make a DK asap… i was thinking of waiting till the buzz dies down but they seem too good to be true… and also no i on’t let my other characters collect dust… mainly my druid… he was my first toon and i’ll never delete him… i will always get on him for pvp or raids or wateva….

  53. zarni Says:

This is what I was a bit worried about, though you have to admit that it’s a hero class. What’s the point of it being a hero class if it isn’t more powerful than the others. It will be very interesting to see how Blizzard balances this…

I also can’t wait to play one.

  54. Fyre Says:

I am afraid WOW will BECOME only Deathknights. I am afraid everyone will want only to play THEM. And so why would anyone play anything else if the DK is so great ?
I am afraid it will change WOW too much.

Maybe they will nerf it a bit before it goes retail, and I do admit that I sort of at least want to check it out and play it a bit but how could WOW be as funa and good as it is now if everyone is the “same”- meaning everyone is a DK?
Won’t everyone who buys the game be sort of like me? — wanting to at least do it since they paid for the game ?

    Just my thoughts…:)

  55. John Says:

Hi, my account was also selected to participate in the WOTLK Beta. I Copied my Paladin over from the older game and I Made a DK as well. The DK, after all the introduction quests are over, start exploring the world with a good quality (and cool looking) weapon (with an enchant on the weapon as well) and good quality (and mean looking) armor and trinkets. They also start with plenty of bag space. They play differently than characters in TBC and it takes a little while to get used to them but once you do they are fun and powerful. I put all my talents into the Frost Tree and I like it so far, frost has a nice spell interrupt that has a fairly short cool down so you can do it many times in a fight with casters/healers. Yes they are powerful so hopefully they will be toned down a bit to give other classes a fighting chance.

  56. Chris Says:

All of the other toons all have there strenths and weaknesses I would hope that they keep things equal or else it will ruin the game.

  57. Dave Says:

I’ve no doubt there’ll be a good deal of balancing before the expansion ships and will just have to trust Blizzard to make this expansion every bit as good as Burning Crusade. I’ve no doubt I’ll roll a Death Knight to have a play, however, my Druid will remain my main due to the amount of fun I’ve had playing this class over the past few years.

  58. Jt Hollister Says:

I’m sure that’s what the beta is for — when they see that people are totally pwning, they’ll have to bring the power down a bit.

Then again — what about the other toons? Maybe other classes get huge bonuses in between 70 and 80 to the point where they can rival the DK.

Anyway, of course everyone’s going to flock to the DK class at first, that’s unavoidable. But over time it will most certainly even itself back out, assuming Blizzard gives its usual attention to detail and makes sure that the balance is right.

  59. Brothar Says:

A lot of classes were highly overpowered in the original WoW beta. I’m willing to bet a lot of people put in their feedback about DK back to Blizz and Im sure before release they will be nerfed substantially. But thanks for the blog man, I didnt get into beta, so its good someone is keeping me updated. Can you throw in some more info about this class? For example, with the “Army of The Dead” ability, how long can you keep a corpse animated for? And with the “spread disease” ability does the disease wear off to anyone who comes in contact with you and can it be spread from one carrier to the next? thanks.

  60. Dark Says:

I think it’s *way* to early to be crying “overpowered” on Death Knights. WotLK is still *very* much in beta, and DKs are seeing radical changes in every push. Spells added and removed, mechanics replaced, talents shooting up and town the trees… there simply hasn’t been anything stable enough yet by which to judge their overall power. By the time release comes around, they won’t be any more overpowered than any other class in the game.

  61. Myles Says:

i think it would be sort of a good thing if they are over powered, you could level to 80 twice as fast but on the other hand, i would like a challange.

  62. Aroz Says:

its funny because most people look at the DK and go “wow OP class” warriors will be able to DW 2h weapons that my friends is OP mages will have a stun shammys can summon stuff ( not shure about the warrior speck but you need melee shammys and frost mages for the stun and wolf summon ) PVP will be crazy and DK will not own it in the least so we should point fingers at Warriors with OPX500 DW 2h >.> but over all pvp will be crazy but i think it will bring more people to the game and keep the people it already has

  63. thezombie (dragonblight) Says:

i can see you point about what might happen, but when new races came out in BC not everyone got a draenai or a blood elf straight away, i’ve pre-ordered WoTLK and im definately downloading it as soon as i get it, and making a death knight as soon as the patches are done, but it doesn’t nececarilly mean i wont want to go on thezombie and train him some more (im lv 24 right now but i level almost every 2 days, im doing instances for gold and xp), anyway, back to the point, im not gonna be training my DK to level 80 before i even have my warrior (Thezombie) at level 50… but when my warrior hits lv80, its probs gonna be DK all the way, and then my warrior will start collecting dust, and if this happens to most players, yeah, DK could take over after a while

  64. Tauno Says:

    Well what about hunters?
Since they are pretty much “unneeded” and are kicked from grps much if they get a better one (that from my experience), sure Blizzard gives us pet talents, but the DKs self healing powers, and improved bloodpresence which heals ALL in the raid for 50-100%. I simply think that DKs should be a little overpowered since they are hero classes but destroying the hunters is something i do NOT want to see hunters left behind. And a last thing, how much is given to BM hunters? they get the ability to get different pets with other talents? is that the only thing to us?

Now to something completely different, what if once the last talent was a “transform/be-able-to-make-a” heroclass? like BM hunters become Beast Masters and fury warriors become Berserkers? Just sharing my thoughts.

  65. Shawn Says:

I honestly dont belive the deathknight class is over powered at the moment, however some of there abilities seem to be rigged towads there favor in the beta because they want to get the beta players hooked on there abilities. i also ahve a beta key and curently have a lvl 60 deathknight and i specd frost and this just simply isnt hte case with all specs. i do however agree on the fact that death knights are capable of running 5 man dungeons with 5 deathknights. that is kind of lame in my opinion and that is only because of the blood talent tree. yes the ability to heal yourself and your party by 10% doesnt seem to be over powered but when you got 4 blood deathknights in a party of 5 they just cant simply be stoped. i do belive this will cause chaos in arenas and in world pvp but it just means people who decide not to play their mains will give them something truely hard to master….KILLING THE DEATH KNIGHT SWARM!

  66. AkiraXcore Says:

Well, what I don’t get is why they ONLY made a DK.
Why not do that for every class?
I hate pally’s as it is.
Now they’re going to make them even more coveted.
you know what they should make to shut down the DK?

  67. Maxxor Says:

From what I’ev seen of the other class new abilitys and the research I’ev done on them they are getting some major power boost so they will no doubt beable to equil a DK. But the Death Knight is also a Hero Class First of many to come out. Being a Hero class also means that it has to be some what more powerful then the others. What I mostly mean is the Hero Lvl class is a step above the Base classes like warrios, warlocks, and Shamans but Blizzard is coming up with other Hero classes like i don’t know Arch Druids, Arch Mages, Weapon Masters, Sages, Ningas, Sommoners, and Bishops. So don’t think That the Death Knight will rule the World Of WarCraft for long and from what I’ev read about Hero classes you have to unlock them.

  68. Erol Says:

You have a good point. im not gonna be deaht knight for that reason, cuz EVERYONE is plannin on being on and its going to be annoying. Isnt therea nother one called the hero class? well thats the one im aiming for, ya of course ill makea deathknight but its lil cheap cause EVERYONE wants to be one. equal out the power, and pvp will be DK vs DK? Arena DKS VS DKS its gonna be annoying. and how is the other classes gonna win against one in a duel or Arena, if they can do an instace with outhealers they can deff do PVP without healers to D:

  69. Jack Says:

Hi Derek,i hope what u say here wil not become reality once its in retail, because we all worked hard to lvl it to 70 and i would feel pretty crappy if all that work was for nothing…

  70. Desiree Says:

Yeah, I thought that before they even came out with beta. That the whole game would just be one big Death Knight spree, but on some level I have to agree with the other people’s comments here. Blizzard will fix it — to a point.

BUT… they will still be OP. Just like Warlocks, Rogues are Druids. — the OP classes.

Speaking of druids — if you have read the patch notes, and I am sure you have, The changes they are making to Druids right now will truly make them the “new OP” — all of the classes are seeing some changes, and will probably continue to see more, so that it is more even.

I for one, can’t WAIT to see my mage at LEVEL 80! I can only imagine the 10k crits that will come of that.

  71. Das Woot Says:

Maybe they are just letting people get totally psyched about it just to spread the word … free advertising! :) I don’t know much about beta’s (do you have to pay to play there?) so perhaps it is just a reward for getting your input. I for one would love to play one in beta … it would be like playing a console game on “cheat mode” and just going crazy just for the fun of it … killing everything … :) We’ve all done that at some time or another just for kicks with a console game and cheats. Blizzard may have just allowed a free for all so they could see everyone just get used to the DK and not be worried about dying. Something like that.

My only concern would be that the DK, on PvP servers, could easily overpower other game characters. PvE not so much. I’d hate to see it flat out replace any of our love-to-hate classes!

Thanks for the heads-up. Great blog as usual! Keep up the good work!

  72. Azzerok (Crashridge) Says:

Lawl, I play a priest I cannot wait for the un-veiling of the death knight. I have the feeling that since the DeathKnight will have a huge band-wagon of players priests will be needed more for groups and in PvP we will be able to if possible rip through DK’s with dispell magic / abolish disease.. They will be like a warrior that doesnt have to wait for rage. So, hopefully priests will be able to survive the burst and keep themselves up…

  73. Brian Says:

Yes, the Death Knight is very very powerful. the talent tree’s for every other class have become very very powerful too. like check out the affliction warlock tree. OMG! and the demon tree.. rogues trees look totally awesome too.. all of them

every class gets something amazing in the expansion.. cant wait to try out my hunter with the new pet system.. and exploding shot in survival tree… or maybe ill go beast with and exotic pet.. dont worry. theres too much other cool stuff happening to other classes that the DK wont ruin the game.. its like making 5-man DK groups.. similar to people making 5 man druid groups.. cuz they can do anything as well.. and stealth.. which is better

  74. danveer Says:

nah im mostly sick of everytime im turned down for a group because im ret and i aint go to respec

  75. mike Says:

Well don’t worry. I feel the nerf hammer on the way, just as soon as Bliz gets your credit card number

  76. Sean/Rixs Says:

Hi, Derek, and hello to the others seeing this blog of Derek’s. It was very well thought out. A part of me hopes the death knight will Pwn the competition but a part of me says if that happens there will be no variety of other characters and the game will become boring and un-used by the rest of the players playing WoW (Over 10,000,000 People). And i have a lvl 61 Orc Hunter that ive been working on for 7 months…not moving slowly but wanting to make him the best hunter possible…and grinding all the way through every lvl to make him not just the best hunter but the best raid officer and the best player even against my fellow hordes. I honestly think a death knight would be kool to have as it is…but no i hope they change it and they probably will thats why they wont be bringing out the game until late November…atleast thats what i heard. Thankyou.

[...] the Death Knight is overpowered and the concern in the article is that the game will become World of Deathknight because everyone will play a DK instead of their other [...]

  78. Oliver Says:

if the DK starts taking over the game I’ll quit. it won’t be any funn if you only got one class…

  79. Mitch Says:

I hope you understand that the Death Knight was supposed to be better than a normal class, but does seem a little much. Have fun Beta testing!

  80. anthony Says:

just got my beta key :D gonna see how good these things are…after the day of downloading the beta, but i think ret pallys are going to stand a chance now in pvp because by the looks of it the are a bit OP also

  81. Jmaes Says:

Blizzard aint dumb. There not going to let DKs dominate the game. Maybe at first there be a little OP but by the time people actually start hitting 80 I reckon it will have evened out ALOT more :P Btw how can i check them out to?

  82. Chris Says:

Hey Derek! I understand your point of view on this I am on the linch king beta test realm as an aliance player! I also rolled a death night I have tried blood spec and frost and got to say the do have alot of power and are also very durible the onley thing that has killed me in outlands so far are other death knights of higher lvl’s at the same lvl it comes down to who got the first hit in with them in pvp! but they are not the onley class that is well over powered in the beta testing! I play as a fury spec warrio and a prot paladin on the test realm also and I have found castors like locks and mages are pretty intance in pvp you need atleast 2 players of malee class now to take 1 and they both nearly die aswell but htats another discusion alltogether! well if you would like to find me on linch king my names are mata and motu death night is corruptor

  83. DanJS Says:

got my beta key,and the DK was the first thing I played,I tend to agree that it is overpowered,I have yet to find anything that has brought Me below 80 percent health,I chose to go the blood tree,I do find it to be actually fun,but as it is a beta I am sure they will be nerfed before wtlk is released.

The opening questline I thought was really fun, probably the most fun I have had since starting WoW.I to plan on rolling a DK upon release but I do hope they even the playing field out so to speak,at the same time,I haven’t seen how the other classes are with the new addition to thier spec trees,so kinda intrested to find out how the other classes are doing in the beta

  84. Maxxor Says:

The Death Knight will still be some what overpowered to the base classes because its a hero class. But the beta is just being used to biuld hipe for the hero lvl classes and get the bugs out of the new systems there adding to the game. The death knight will probably dominate for a few months then Blizzard will release afew other of the new hero classes their developing that they haven’t told us about then those classes will dominate. Its really just a standard business practice that game companys use to sell thier products. The Death Knight is probably just a prototype for the other hero classes and their just useing it to get feedback so they can even out the Hero Classes which are advanced classes and ment to be more powerful then the base. I know you will have to unlock them some how but the hero classes are just more powerful versions of the base classes. The hero classes will probably have restrictions on them in The arena because of how powerful they will be, but you can’t look just at the death kinght there will be other hero classes for sure and I don’t think you want to have a hero classes character be just another base character.

  85. Nathan Says:

Wow, True ive heard alot about this. Them being extremly overpowered from reading blogs and watching videos they are like every single in the game

DK= Warrior, Priest, Warlock and a Mage…anything u wanna throw in there!

I do believe the DK will become the game and they just screwed it up by making it so powerful and avaliabe ot every race?….Ive never heard of a
    -Tauren
    -Trolls
    -Dranei
    -Blood and night Elves
    -Gnome
    Death Knights.

So yea this expansion is gonna bring some bad things into the enviroment. And for not dying weres the revenge part? OMG i died im gonna go waste the mob who did that 2 me. Or laught ur self silly casue u died….it a game u die u run back to ur body. Not going below 90% health. at lvl 60 does this meant that Kara will be 5 maned by a DK team? Making all other clases obslete.

  86. Nathan Says:

ohh and who Cares if they are a Hero class. They can be powerful ok but not so powerful they are untouchable and u cant even hit them without dying by a normal hit of 3k.

  87. Tyler Says:

I think blizzard did that on purpose for beta testers so they could get to do the better stuff faster

  88. Maxxor Says:

I agree that the death kinghts can’t be so powerful that thier untouchable but has anyone look at the latest talent layout for the base classes like some of the warriors new talents. Warriors now can immobilize tragets, and warlock can change in to deamons with a 360% armor increase and get deamon abilitys not to mention the druid which has some of the more powerful new talents.

  89. Rob Says:

idk if this is what it ill come down to. obviously, Blizzard was trying to make the Death Knights powerful when they made them, but one part of the Beta is figuring out if they are TOO powerful, which they obviously are. this will prbly change before retail. but either way, DKs sound awesome and i will totally roll one when i get the game.

  90. Jason Says:

If Blizz dont nerf it the DK will be the counter for the rogues and hunters that are OP. Thats a if they dont nerf it like they did to the war class

  91. Cuchulainn Says:

The latest update has Blood DKs basically overpowering the entire game. This is just not right. What do I mean?

Ok… This is my toon: I have a 77 DK, blood specced. (
    http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/deathknight/talents2.html?tal=0344320500030312513100031351305200003000000000000000000002000000000000000000000000000000)
I did most of the quests that give blue items, so my gears are mostly decked out by now. With Troll Butcherer, the damage is at about 1000~1300, and AP at 1600, with HP at 13000.

Case 1: There is a 5-man quest, where you must slay Sarathstra, in Dragonblight. That Frostwyrm is lvl 75 elite, with HP at 265k. Since it’s a beta server, there are not many people around, and naturally people have hard time completing it because they just can’t find a group. Me? I soloed it, and when Sarathstra was down, I was at 95%. Does this sound right? This is supposed to be 5-man quest, and is giving headache to every other class, but not me. A bit of a long fight, but that’s all there was. I didn’t even break sweat.

Case 2: This was when I was at Drak’tharon keep. By the roll of luck, my 4 consecutive attacks all crit: Heart Strike 5500 -> Oblit 5100 -> Heart Strike 5500 -> Oblit 5100, all in but a span of a mere 6 secs. True, I had 2 other DKs, and had a lot of diseases on the mob, if I can dish out mad damage like this, how about two other guys? Wouldn’t they dish out as much? Can you name a class that can dish out this much of pain in such a short span of time? I have yet to find one from others.

Case 3: From Ajol-Nerub. I see Heart Strike crit at a massive 7700. Then 6400. Then 6600. Massive crit hits are what makes DPSers proud, but those massive hits usually come during raid time, when you get just about all the synergy effect you can garner. And my blood DK is dishing out massive hits like there is no tomorrow – in 5 man instances. What’s going to happen in raid situation? I don’t want to think about it.

DK is clearly overpowered. It’s much too overpowered, that it makes me shun away from other “conventional” characters – when it comes to DPS capability or survivability, none of the conventional characters come anywhere close to the almighty DKs.

  92. dustin Says:

hey derek, first of i was wanting to say your vids are awesome and help a lot. and im not going to play my DK for the rest of wows life, im stil going to play my ne hunter and do raids with him and stuff but. thats it and thanks for listening, keep the vids comin.

  93. ruth Says:

i could care less… its good that the DK is over powered, it means.. MORE PWNING!

  94. shadowrach Says:

it sound scary ye i edmit buti cant see why blizzard would make a class that would overpower every singel class. i meen classes get new talents etc so i dont know if the deathknight will be so mutch better but what u said about not dropping under 90% health thats freaking scary!.
thatas all for now. may the stars watch over you guys

  95. Mollebolle Says:

Im leveling a DK in beta and they are so awesome, its like you’re 5 lvl’s higher than the mobs who are the same lvl as you.No downtime at all and high dps.Too bad the nerbat will hit dk’s soon hehe

  96. Shadow Says:

I will be for sure rolling a DK. Make Gnome DK with a pink Mohawk lol.
But I honestly hope Blizzard Nerfs DKs to be Maybe only a little better than the conventional classes. It IS a HERO class, so one would think it should have a SLIGHT edge on the standard classes. But for THAT much of a gap from what I have read, That’s just retarded. Because EVERYONE will roll DKs and we will see a complete lack of class diversity. Seeing the world of PvE AND PvP flodded with death knights could potentially ruin the game. It will destroy the diversity and general team feeling of raids and instances.

I like the idea, but don’t like the power.

  97. Darkhealer Says:

I’d love to play an DK! but in the beginning, ill lvl my Shaman up to lvl 80, DK may be as overpowered they want, but shamans still got the totems for groups!

  98. Lazmin Says:

I’ve yet to play the expansion yet but i watched my friend knock out the pre-quest line for the deathknight in about 30 to 45 minutes. They are insanely overpowered. I will be rolling one just because every other class is old to me….

  99. Gary Says:

i think that the deathnight is cool and has addad a fun facter the game .i for one liked the change.haveing said that i still play my lock and hunter first because i like them better.they are both lvl80,s .i will lvl my dk up to 80 as well.but you do know that dk,s can,t heal groups?all the classes have there place yet.

  100. Shadowsummon Says:

Yeah i see what you mean xD, i saw a dk guarding goldshire on my realm, every 80 horde that came along just pretty much didnt get to fire off a spell before the dramatic deaths XD

and just so you know, the free guide thing keeps giving me a 404 when i try to submit it

  101. Elomace Says:

Yeah the DK maybe overpowered but their ability to pwn is unmatched by few that when it comes time to take revenge on your opponents the taste of victory makes you want to come back for more. I still play my main Elomar lvl 71 Hunter on the Drendan realm because well he was my first toon and I can still dish out some punishment with him. However I can exact my revenge on those who have done me wrong wit my DK. The only cliche everyone who has a lvl 50 is grabbing DK’s left and right which means some might hang up their main to collect dust. So ppl if it wasn’t for our main’s hard work we wouldn’t have our DK’s so pay respect to your mains plz ppl don’t remeber the value of our mains.

  102. MastrWyzrd Says:

The DK class is NOT overpowered….omg, I am so sick and tired of hearing that, they are the first of the ” HERO ” class, they are supposed to be this powerful ! Do you honestly think a “Hero” class character would be the same in relation to existing classes now? C’mon, find something else to bitch about, this is old and tired…lol.
